7 BEST Beaches in the AZORES – PORTUGAL

Sharing is caring!

Azores beach

The archipelago of the Azores, belonging to Portugal, is a dream location, a vacation destination that always surprises. It is a group of nine Portuguese islands located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, forming part of what is called Macaronesia. The main islands in the south are Sâo Miguel and Terceira, although you can also enjoy a good getaway in the others. Graciosa, Pico or Faial are some of its islands.

In Azores we will find kilometers of coastline to be able to enjoy its best beaches. Tourists flock to these islands for many reasons, but mostly because their landscapes are said to be spectacular. There are hiking trails, landscapes full of greenery, towns and villages steeped in history and of course their beaches, which we are going to focus on.

Mosteiros Beach (Sao Miguel)

This beach is located in the northwest of the island. The origin of the islands being volcanic, it is normal that we find many black sand beaches. East the beach stands out because on the horizon we can see several islets known as the rocks of Mosteiros, which add a certain charm to the landscape. These volcanic monoliths that emerge from the sea have capricious shapes, shaped by the action of water and wind. This beach has beautiful landscapes and clear waters, in addition to having some services such as parking.

Formosa Beach (Santa Maria)

On the island of Santa María we can find beaches different from those usually seen throughout the Azores archipelago, which usually have dark sand and air and waves. But Santa María, we have beaches like Formosa, which has golden sand and usually has a pleasant breeze, which makes it very attractive. It is not a very wide beach, but its strip of sand is enough to be able to spend a good day at the beach bathing in its clean and crystalline waters. If we want to be able to see the beach in its entirety, we can go up to the Miradouro da Macela. Hiking is frequent on the island to admire the amazing landscapes.

Santa Barbara Beach (Sao Miguel)

This beach is located in the north-central area of the volcanic island. It is precisely in the town of Ribeira Seca and is a kilometer sandbar. On this island there are not very long beaches, so it is one of the largest. In this, as in many other islands, the conditions are ideal for the practice of sports such as surfing, kitesurfing or windsurfing, which is why many athletes choose it to practice their favorite sports. It is a popular beach on the island, so it also has many services such as a playground, bars or bathrooms. So the whole family can enjoy a perfect day at the beach where everyone can have a great time.

Porto Pim Beach (Faial)

This beach is a white sand beach, something unusual in the islands. It is located next to the fishing village and although it is not very big, the environment makes it a cozy and very beautiful place. A perfect place for snorkeling, as you can see many fish.

Caloura Beach (Sao Miguel)

Caloura is the name of a small fishing village on the island. This island of the Azores and many others have excellent natural pools formed in the volcanic rock that creates incredible and unique beaches. It’s one of those special attractions that brings people to the island every year. We have a small beach with blue waters for swimming and near the shore there is a wonderful natural pool ideal for swimming. One of those beaches that stand out for their particularity.
